5 stars all round: Rave reviews for our latest Walton recording

Released just a couple of weeks ago, our latest recording of the music of William Walton, including his Cello Concerto and Symphony No.1 has received outstanding reviews and immediately shot to No.2 in the Official Classical Charts.

Gramophone Magazine featured it as Recording of the Month and said “Jonathan Aasgaard is a beautifully lyrical soloist…and throughout John Wilson an absolute master of this music“, going on to say “the level of virtuosity displayed by this band can be, and is here, absolutely jaw dropping“.

The Guardian was similarly taken by the recording, awarding it 5 stars and saying that “Conductor John Wilson’s rumbustious reading and cellist Jonathan Aasgaard’s angst-ridden romantic sweep bring out the brooding tension and snarling climaxes

The Telegraph was equally smitten – again awarding the disc 5 stars, describing it as “exhilarating” and “compelling“.

Our third five star review came from the Financial Times, who said “The symphony has great drive and is given detailed orchestral playing, as one would expect from this source. Its temperament feels exhilarating.”

You can watch some behind the scenes footage from the recording of Walton’s Cello Concerto below, and of course the recording is available now to buy, download and stream.
