Sold out concerts to be streamed

John Wilson and Sinfonia of London’s two sold out concerts at the Aldeburgh Festival 2023 will be streamed for online audiences via MarqueeTV.

The two concerts, taking place at Snape Maltings on 17 and 18 June, will be available worldwide to MarqueeTV subscribers in July 2023.

The first concert, Orchestral Showpieces, will feature Aldeburgh Festival artist Roderick Williams for a highly atmospheric programme of orchestral showpieces including Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which famously appeared in Disney’s Fantasia, and a world premiere by Sally Beamish.

Sally Beamish describes her orchestral version of Four Songs from Hafez, commissioned by Britten Pears Arts, as “settings of the 14th-century Persian Sufi poet, each using a bird or animal to describe separation from, and longing for, the Beloved”.

The programme also includes the first of three tone poems by Respighi evoking four Italian fountains at different times of the day. This will be the first opportunity to hear Sinfonia of London perform the Respighi live since its acclaimed recording of the work was released in 2020, winning a BBC Music Magazine Award in 2021. The programme concludes with Rachmaninoff’s final composition for orchestra, his Symphonic Dances.

The second concert (18 June) will unite John Wilson’s hand-picked “super orchestra” with virtuosic piano duo Pavel Kolesnikov and Samson Tsoy for a rare opportunity to hear Britten’s Scottish Ballad. The programme will also include British orchestral favourites by Delius and Walton, plus Elgar’s radiant Symphony No.2.
